At West Colang Conservancy, out mission is to foster a united community dedicated to safeguarding the health of the lake and it's wildlife, ensuring it thrives for swimming, boating, fishing, and future generations.
During 2020 we noticed a gradual decline of the quantity of fish in the lake.
During 2021 and 2022, we began noticing the health of the fish in the lake began to decline as the quantity of fish declined even further.
By 2023 we began to suspect something was going on with the lake as the decline in quantity and health became even worse but we were unsure where to turn to investigate.
In 2024 we began our research into who to contact for testing and who to reach out to for further information regarding possible causes.
In 2025 we partnered with Solitude Lake Management for testing. Low dissolved oxygen levels and low temperatures were discovered witch can severely affect both plant and aquatic marine life in the lake. We also discovered a permit pulled in 2019 to disperse both Rodeo and Reward herbicides in the lake.
Solitude Lake Management recommended twice per month visits to test dissolved oxygen levels, temperatures of the water columns, and other tests not currently performed including for ammonia, total nitrogen, total phosphorous, total suspended solids, and biological oxygen demand, along with a copper based herbicide instead of the Diquat type found to be used beginning in 2019, the Diquat type can cause what we are seeing with lower dissolved oxygen rates, and also recommended is SedDox Max treatment which can increase the oxygen in the basin, rebalance the nutrient ratio, and bind any excess phosphorus.
We love our lake and lake house community and look forward to hearing from you and hearing your own concerns. With over 100 years of history at our family lake house, we would love to come together as a community to restore our lake and do whatever it may take to revive our lake to it's former glory so it can be enjoyed for generations to come.

We started Westcolang Lake Conservancy with a simple goal in mind: to create a platform that makes it easy for people to connect with others who share our interests, concerns, and passions. Our journey has been a long and winding one, but we're proud of what we've accomplished so far.

At Westcolang Conservancy, we believe that building a strong and supportive community is key to our success. That's why we've created a platform that brings people together and fosters a sense of belonging and connection among our fellow lake residents and visitors.

While treatments and testing can help we welcome other ideas such as biofiltration systems that can help keep total suspended solids, phosphorous, nitrogen, and other pollutants out of the lake to make it healthier and more supportive of aquatic plant and animal life.

If you have any questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We're always looking for ways to improve our platform, and your input is invaluable.

Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals and fund our mission. Testing our water in the lake along with finding ways to mitigate the effects of algae, aquatic plant control, and restoring dissolved oxygen levels. With over $10,000 spent in 2025 alone we are looking for ways to mitigate costs.
